Last week we went on holidays; destination: Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark. I loved it and that’s why I want to share what I’ve enjoyed.
Our Airbnb apartment was located in the heart of Østerbro, a nice family friendly neighbourhood. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t that nice, therefore we didn’t visit as many outdoor attractions and parks as we wanted. Fortunately, Copenhagen is packed with great coffee shops, bakeries, restaurants, museums and shops, therefore we did not get bored 😉
Østerbro is really pretty and has lots to offer. We found a bakery close to our apartment. On the first day, we took croissants and coffee to go, on the second day we had breakfast there and on the other days we bought bread to have breakfast at home. I can recommend Det Rene Brød located on Rosenvængets Allé, their rye bread, chocolate croissants and Danish sweets are fantastic.
On that same street, we had Burgers and fries to go from a place called Cocks & Cows, they have five facilities around the city. Most ingredients are organic which is a plus. We tasted the Kevin vegan and the Governator. The Burgers where juicy and full of flavour. The patty of the Kevin vegan is made with chickpeas and beets – a combo I must try to make at home. The Governator contains a beef patty, bacon, cheese and all that yummy stuff that meat lovers love. The burgers such as the fries where both delicious, I’d definitely go back for a tasty burger.
A restaurant we enjoyd having dinner at was Romarin, it has a rustic but elegant touch. You choose between a 3,4 or 5 course meal. All dishes are the same price – a lovely system. It is not a Restaurant for vegetarians, I’m glad I eat fish!! By the way the red wine of the house is extremely good.
A good place for vegans is Souls. It’s all vegan. Our lunch was nice but we had the impression that everything tasted the same. I’ve heard that it’s great for brunch.
Within 30 minutes walking distance we reached the neighbourhood of Nørrebro. We visited the Superkilen, a really nice park designed by arts group Superflex with the collaboration of Bjarke Ingels Group and Topotek1, a German landscape architecture firm. This park is worth a visit.
A really, really nice street to visit in this neighbourhood is Jægersborggade. The shops are so pretty and there are lots of great organic coffee spots. The coffee at the coffee collective for instance is perfection.
Close to Jægersborggade, on the corner of Stefansgade and Husumgade you’ll find Stefanos Mad&Kaffe. We had Brunch there and it was great. The ordering system is simple, you choose between 3 and 5 items by making a cross on the menu card next to the brunch item – bread and butter is included. We had feta rolls, avocado, hummus, salmon spread, Turkish style scrambled eggs, sausages, granola and American pancakes. The brunch was nicely served in small bowls. Brunch is served until 14:00pm, perfect also for those who like to sleep in.
A walk through the Assistens cemetery is nice too, it is not a conventional cemetery and it has a beautiful tree alley – it’s much nicer than walking alongside the main street.
Further, I enjoyed walking through Vesterbro. It’s a hip neighbourhood packed with small shops coffee spots, bakeries, restaurants and bars. We had dinner at Mad & Kaffe which is located on Sønder Boulevard. The cuisine is Nordic – we ordered a salmon sandwich, a cabbage salad with goat cheese bruschetta and a burger with fires. No downer at all, the food was fresh, great for the pallet and the eye.
The meatpacking district is perfect for those who like street food, busy restaurants and bars. It’s a place for nightlife lovers. We went to Mikkeller for a beer. They have their own in-house brewery – the beer is great by the way. I definitely recommend Mikkeller but it was not really the perfect destination to go to with our little daughter, therefore we did not stay too long.
Christianshavn is a beautiful neighbourhood. We went to the street food market located in the industrial area right by the sea. To get there we walked along the canal. The canal in Christianshavn is beautiful, it’s packed with stunning boats. Some boats are people’s houses, these have a romantic and cosy touch to them.
The Street food market was super, it’s a big hall full of street food stands therefore, everyone will find something to eat and or drink. The atmosphere is exactly what it should be, friendly and busy, best of all, its beautifully located. If you go to Chriatianshavn I would recommend having a look at the Hippie area Christiania, it’s a world of its own – very authentic.
The inner city (City center) is nice to see as it is one big pedestrian area. The shops and restaurants are mostly big chains which on the other hand is not really what attracts me. I enjoyed the side streets more, that’s where the cute boutiques are hidden. We did have a great coffee at the democratic coffee. By the way they sell the best croissants in town, but you should get there early if you want one 😉
A tourist attraction is the little mermaid, located close to the port. I recommend visiting the park and the seashore of that area, the statue is nice but not spectacular.
We visited the museum of Architecture and the museum of Design. I enjoyed the exhibition at the museum of architecture. It is all about designing cities in a human centred way. Copenhagen is known for that and I think that’s also the reason why it is so attractive. For instance, Copenhagens are bike riders, therefore the city has integrated massive bike lanes and a whole traffic system for bike riders.
At the museum of Design, most of all I enjoyed the huge chair collection. A large part of the exhibition is about fashion which didn’t interest me that much. The coffee at the end of the exhibition is lovely – we had salad and soup, both where nicely plated and good.
The city is great for pedestrians and bike riders (If the weather is good, I’d recommend renting a bike). To get from one neighbourhood to the other, I’ve enjoyed walking alongside the canals.
I guess I could go on talking about this beautiful city. And I believe that there are so many beautiful things I did not see. Due to the bad weather, we did not visit the urban rooftop garden … I’m sure that would have been a nice experience. I encourage everyone to go there. If you do, take enough money with you – it is an expensive city but it’s worth it!
